Backstory Episode!

I had the honor and pleasure of being interviewed by Alex Roberts for Backstory, a podcast that focuses on game designers and other awesome members of the roleplaying world. You can find the episode here. We talked about the ways in which immersive theater and larp overlap and differ, The Long Drive Back from Busan, But Not Tonight, Battle of the Boybands, and Living Games Conference to name a few! I’m very grateful to have had this opportunity to talk about designing and playing games, and I highly recommend binge-listening to the entire archive of episodes because it is full of interviews with amazing designers, organizers, and other people who contribute so much to the community.

But Not Tonight on The Board Game Workshop Podcast

I meant to post about this earlier, but I was interviewed about But Not Tonight for The Board Game Workshop podcast while at Boston FIG this year. The episode can be found here, and I come on at 32:15. If you weren’t able to make it and wish you had been there, there are two full episodes dedicated entirely to the tabletop portion of the festival and you can hear about all the great games that were there.

Golden Cobra Challenge Award!

I am very excited to announce that earlier this month, my game The Long Drive Back from Busan won the Golden Cobra Challenge award for Best Game That Incorporates Meaningful, Non-Romantic Relationships! The game is about a struggling k-pop male group and their ordeals at a music festival in Busan. The game will be published along with all the other great entries in the Golden Cobra 2017 Anthology. I will post about it once that’s available.

If you are interested in freeform games, I highly recommend taking a look at and playing some of the Golden Cobra games from former years if you haven’t already. Last year’s entries can be found here.

Withdrawing from IndieCade and Car Accident

Just a quick update here, as I’m still not supposed to be spending too much time looking at screens. I unfortunately had to withdraw But Not Tonight from IndieCade this year because attending the festival would have been too financially challenging. It’s definitely been a bummer, but I have some other exciting things in the works right now that I’m looking forward to sharing…eventually…as progress on all of my projects has been delayed because I was recently in a car accident and suffered a concussion. I’m on the mend but not fully functional yet, and it’s unclear when I’ll be able to return to my normal workload and schedule. Nothing has been dropped, just put aside temporarily while my brain and everything else heals. I’m still very excited to get But Not Tonight out there in the world! For now, however, I’m focused on recovering.

Boston FIG 2017

Boston FIG 2017 has concluded, and But Not Tonight has had its first introduction to the greater gaming world. I’m still not always sure how to talk about larp to people who aren’t familiar with it (or worse, if they only have a very narrow and unfavorable view of it based on peripheral interactions with it), but I think we can count this year’s Boston FIG as a success.

Right now, the plan for But Not Tonight looks like this:

  • Continue to send out the freeform version to people who have asked to run it.
  • Finish up the tabletop version of the game, playtest the bejeezus out of it.
  • Finish the three other 80s-themed games that are currently untitled and playtest the bejeezus out of them too. These games are inspired by The Goonies, Labyrinth and Legend, and 80s slasher flicks. I am considering adding some other games to the mix, but I’m also eager to finish this project up so I can send it out into the world.
  • Publish these games all in one collection and throw a Depeche Mode dance party.
